Hodgson Mirror Adhesive - 310ml

Hodgson’s market leading Mirror Adhesive is a fast-curing adhesive which allows the user to secure mirrors to many vertical surfaces in situations which would otherwise require the use of mechanical fixings. Its special solvent-free formulation has been extensively tested for compatibility with all known mirror backing paints and once cured, its flexible rubberised characteristics can accommodate small surface irregularities.

Features:

  • No need for mechanical fixings
  • Excellent adhesion to a wide variety of non-porous surfaces.
  • Can accommodate small surface irregularities
  • Good working time
  • Fast curing – temporary support can often be removed within 24 hours
  • Resistant to high levels of humidity
  • Compatible against all known mirror backing paints

Dimensions:

  • Width: 5.0cm
  • Depth: 5.0cm
  • Height: 2.30cm

Application

Secure mirrors up to 1m2 to vertical surfaces without the use of mechanical fixings. Once cured, it can accommodate small surface irregularities. Excellent adhesion to a wide variety of non-porous surfaces such as painted plaster or wood, ceramic tiles and glass. Not suitable for use on safety-backed mirrors.

Properties

Curing rate: Cures at a rate of 2-3mm in 24 hours @ 20°C / 65% RH. Lower temperatures and drier conditions will result in a slower rate of cure.

Skinning time: Skin forms after approximately 30 minutes at 20°C @ 65% RH

Application temperature range: +5°C to +30°C

Working time: 5 – 10 minutes

Shelf life: 12 months

Surface Preparation & Application

Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from frost, grease, or loose materials. Apply primer if necessary. On porous or friable surfaces such as brickwork, plaster, plywood, or blockwork, it's recommended to first apply a coat of good quality emulsion and allow it to fully dry for at least 16 hours before applying the adhesive.

Check that the substrate is flat and vertical, and fix any necessary supports for the mirror in place beforehand. If the surface is uneven or non-vertical, make suitable allowances.

Cut the nozzle to suit the desired bead size, and apply the adhesive using a skeleton or powered gun. For flat surfaces, apply 6mm diameter vertical beads, approximately 300mm in length and spaced 150mm apart. Keep the adhesive at least 50mm from the mirror’s edge. For irregular surfaces, increase the bead size to 8–10mm.

Once the adhesive is applied, immediately press the mirror into place, aiming for a final adhesive thickness of 1.5–2.5mm. Support the weight of the mirror for 6–10 hours. Note that colder temperatures, lower humidity, or thicker adhesive layers may extend the required support time.

IMPORTANT:

Mirrors with a thickness of 6mm and an area greater than 1m2 must be permanently supported. Mirrors fixed overhead of any size should be mechanically fixed.
